Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves reenact ‘Matrix’ scene on ‘The Tonight Show’

‘Tonight Show’ – June 8, 2019

Actress Winona Ryder welcomed “Matrix” star Keanu Reeves back to “The Tonight Show” to reenact a scene from the critically acclaimed 1994 sci-fi thriller and see if Keanu could one-up him. Reeves and Ryder will hit theaters later this year with the film “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.”

“The Matrix” pioneered the extreme action genre of the 1990s. It was followed by the massively successful two sequels “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions.” All of them, though, are considered disappointments.

But Reeves says he is happy to finally get “John Wick” out into the world.

“We hope people like it and we hope that it does well,” said Reeves. “I love this movie and it just turns out that more people see it.”

Ryder, meanwhile, admits she had to do some homework for the role of Wick’s ex-wife and assassin, played by Alfie Allen.

Ryder said, “I have a daughter now (who) also gets hired off, and I know that I gotta go get those little people, so I went home and worked out some stuff.”

“You really got married under the eyes of God and in this situation, in this movie, I don’t blame you,” joked host Jimmy Fallon.

Reeves and Ryder first teamed up for a 1994 “Good Will Hunting” scene before Reeves’ “Matrix” movies started dominating film marquees. In the rebooted “Good Will Hunting,” Wallace Robinett’s voiceover credits were written with Reeves’ voice in mind.

“I call it a backdoor coming,” Reeves explained. “We started the idea with Ben Affleck. So, Ben, Scott Rudin, and of course I had done ‘Good Will Hunting’ and it was just easy for us to work with each other.”

Ryder said that Affleck, who co-wrote the Oscar-winning script with Damon, had recently seen Reeves in “The Last Samurai” and implored him to try to reteam with Reeves.

“I think he thought that ‘Good Will Hunting’ was funny and he thought that it was a sweet movie, so he wanted to ask me to do a sequel,” Ryder said. “It was something that he had always wanted to do and I was like, ‘Oh my god!’ I mean, I hadn’t even heard of the ‘Good Will Hunting’ sequel before.”

“Now you’ll never stop hearing that,” joked Fallon.

The pair have since developed a working relationship.

“Now Keanu and I have become the best of friends, so we’re always going to be out partying together, you know?” said Ryder.

“I would just love to shoot him again, I just think he’s great,” Reeves said.

In reality, Reeves hasn’t really given much thought to reprising his role as Agent Smith in the “Matrix” sequels and said that he’d also really like to do a sci-fi movie “about a dude just moving around the galaxy and washes up on an alien planet and gets over his stuff.”
