A man is being treated in hospital after police called out to an alleged disturbance at a house in a secure unit near Durham.

Senior Investigating Officer Danny Greene said a 44-year-old patient died later at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

“We are treating the death as suspicious,” he said.

Police said the incident began with a 999 call at 1826 BST on Tuesday.

‘Tragic loss’

“A man and woman aged 45 and 46 years old were detained at the address,” Mr Greene said.

“Two male patients were disturbed at the secure unit. A 44-year-old patient in a secure unit was found to have sustained a serious head injury.”

The man died in hospital.

“Our investigation is in its early stages and inquiries are ongoing at this stage, but it is believed to be an isolated incident,” Mr Greene said.

“No-one else is believed to be involved in the incident.”

No further details were given about the investigation or victims, the police said.

A spokesman for James Cook University Hospital said: “One of our staff, a nurse, is being treated for suspected heat exhaustion. She was shaken by the incident and received immediate first aid until the arrival of an ambulance.”
