Biden arrives on Nantucket for visit to LGBTQ group

Vice President Joe Biden arrived on Massachusetts island Nantucket on Monday for some errands before a series of political events in his home state of Delaware and nationally.

Biden, who has been vacationing on Nantucket since July 8, shops at Dune Seafoods on Main Street before his afternoon jog along the beautiful harbor along with an aide.

When asked for an update on his family member’s health, Biden’s aide didn’t sound particularly concerned.

“I’m not sure,” the aide responded.

“Well I am,” the vice president said before returning to town.

Later Monday afternoon, Biden and wife Jill Biden are scheduled to attend the Christmas tree lighting ceremony hosted by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind at the Nantucket Foundation’s downtown home. Libeskind designed the Sept. 11 Memorial in New York.

Earlier in the day, Biden, a long-time resident of Delaware, toured a local farm to see how the freshly harvested peaches are being prepared for his annual peach pie, the birthday gift he gives his wife.

“And everyone has a glass of home bubbly,” Biden added.

Later that evening, Biden is scheduled to speak at a party at Tolo’s before returning to Delaware on Tuesday.

Gathering with friends, the Bidens spent Sunday celebrating Jill’s 74th birthday while sailing in Annapolis, Md.

Biden never has been much of a Christmas tree seller and for the past few years his longtime personal security detail and Secret Service agents have escorted him through his neighborhood to be near the tree farm.

Biden also has joined some Nantucket residents in checking out the works in progress on a massive new Navy aircraft carrier being built in Newport, R.I.

No one on the island has any illusions that the Bidens will remain on Nantucket for an extended period of time. Biden has grumbled about his temporary accommodations in homes owned by his friends last year when he was just one of the last remaining significant movers and shakers who remained on the island.

In January, Biden paid a visit to Jewish National Fund’s office in Williamsburg to express his interest in working with Jewish leaders to achieve a comprehensive Middle East peace agreement.

On the eve of the 24th anniversary of the Six Day War in 1967, Jewish National Fund, a worldwide humanitarian organization, and Biden committed to formulating a joint initiative that would bridge divides across the Middle East and facilitate meaningful and enduring peace for all of Israel’s neighbours.
